Primary text

It is recommended to follow the example of the Prophet (peace be upon him) in remaining overnight until dawn, and then standing until the light spreads (Isfar). Departure is recommended before sunrise, as the Prophet (peace be upon him) contradicted the polytheists who delayed departure until sunrise. The Sunnah is to remain standing until Isfar becomes very pronounced. This is the position of Al-Shafi'i and the People of Reason. Companions like Ibn Al-Zubayr and Ibn Mas'ud followed this practice, and Ibn 'Umar also departed when Isfar occurred and the camels' resting places became clearly visible.

Imam Malik held that departure before Isfar was permissible.
