What is required when a person performing Hajj Qiran invalidates their ritual and subsequently performs the Hajj as Ifrad (a pilgrimage performed without offerings)?
Chapter on the Description of Hajj
Al-Mughni
Book of Hajj
Primary text
When a person performing Hajj Qiran invalidates their ritual and then performs the Hajj as Ifrad, no blood sacrifice (damm) is incumbent upon them for the Qada (making up) pilgrimage. This is because performing Hajj Ifrad is superior to Qiran when a sacrifice is necessitated by the invalidation. Since the person performed the superior act, nothing is required of them, analogous to one who was obligated to pray using Tayammum (dry ablution) but instead performed it with Wudu (ablution with water).

Al-Shafi'i holds that a sacrifice is required in the make-up pilgrimage (Qada) because everything required in the performance (Ada') is also required in the make-up (Qada), and a sacrifice was obligatory in the performance (Qiran).
