What is required for a pilgrim who is restricted (muhsar) to exit the state of Ihram?
Chapter on What the Muhrim Must Avoid and What is Permissible for Him
Al-Mughni
Book of Hajj
Primary text
The release from the state of Ihram for a restricted pilgrim requires two things: ritual slaughter (Nahr) or fasting, along with the intention (Niyyah), provided we hold that shaving (Halaq) is not a prescribed rite (Nusk). If we hold that shaving is a prescribed rite, then release is achieved by three things: shaving, along with the previously mentioned conditions. The intention is required for the restricted pilgrim because they seek to exit the act of worship before its completion, necessitating a specific purpose. Furthermore, ritual slaughter may be performed for reasons other than exiting Ihram, thus requiring the specific intention to designate it for that purpose.

If one has performed the general actions of the pilgrimage rites without restriction, release is achieved merely by completing those rites, thus rendering the specific intention unnecessary, unlike the restricted pilgrim. This is contrasted with stoning (Ramy), which is exclusively for the rites, meaning it does not require a specific intention to be valid for the ritual.
