What is the ruling if a designated, non-defective animal perishes or becomes defective without negligence after designation?
Chapter on Ransom (Fidyah) and Penalty for Hunting

Primary text
If a designated, sound animal perishes or becomes defective without negligence on the part of the owner, he is not obligated to offer more than what was originally due in the *dhimmah*. This is because the additional value attached to the specific animal is nullified by its perishing, reverting to the original obligation of the *hady* when the specific designation was not mandatory apart from the general obligation.
