What is the ruling on a lawful person (ḥalāl) hunting game for a person in Ihram?
Chapter on What the Muhrim Must Avoid and What is Permissible for Him
Al-Mughni
Book of Hajj
Primary text
If a lawful person hunts and slaughters game, and the person in Ihram provided assistance, indication, or pointing toward it, the game is also forbidden for the person in Ihram to eat. Furthermore, if the game was hunted specifically for the person in Ihram, they are prohibited from consuming it. This view is related from Uthman ibn Affan and is the position of Malik and Al-Shafi'i.

Abu Hanifa permitted eating the game based on the Hadith of Abu Qatadah, where the Prophet (peace be upon him) permitted eating the remainder of the hunted animal because none of the companions had commanded or indicated it. This suggests the prohibition is tied only to commanding or assisting. Ali, Ibn Umar, Aisha, and Ibn Abbas held that game meat is forbidden for a person in Ihram under all circumstances, a view also held by Tawus. Al-Thawri and Ishaq disliked it based on the general prohibition mentioned in the Quran (Quran 5:96).
