What is the ruling if the obligatory congregational prayer (Al-Maktubah) is called while a person is engaged in Tawaf or Sa'i?
Chapter on Mentioning Hajj and Entering Makkah
Al-Mughni
Book of Hajj
Primary text
If one commences Tawaf or Sa'i and the call to the obligatory prayer is made, one must pray with the congregation. This is the opinion of the majority of people of knowledge, including Ibn Umar, Salim, 'Ata, Al-Shafi'i, Abu Thawr, and the proponents of the opinion, and this ruling applies also to Sa'i. The evidence is the statement of the Prophet, peace be upon him: 'When the prayer is called, there is no prayer except the obligatory prayer.' Since Tawaf is a prayer, it falls under the general ruling of this Hadith. If this applies to the highly emphasized Tawaf, it applies more so to Sa'i.

Malik holds that one should continue the Tawaf and not interrupt it unless there is fear that delaying it will cause one to miss the obligatory prayer, arguing that Tawaf is a prayer and should not be cut short for another prayer. Those holding the majority view state that after praying, one should resume (Bana) the interrupted Tawaf or Sa'i from where they stopped.
