What is the ruling if one omits a required pebble during the stoning ritual?
Chapter on the Description of Hajj
Al-Mughni
Book of Hajj
Primary text
If one omits a required pebble from the first set of stoning, the stoning of the second set is invalid until the first is completed correctly. If it is unknown from which specific spot (Jamarat) the pebble was omitted, one must proceed based on certainty (i.e., assume the omission was from a required set). If a non-obligatory pebble is omitted, the omission has no effect.
Supporting text
If a man omits a pebble, Tawus suggested he should give one date or a morsel of food as expiation. Mujahid related that Sa'd said upon returning from Hajj with the Messenger of Allah (PBUH), some said they stoned with six and some with seven, and none criticized the other for the difference.
