Primary text

If one postpones the stoning of a specific day to the following day, or postpones all stoning until the end of the Days of Tashreeq, the Sunnah has been abandoned, and there is no expiation due. However, the intention must be made sequentially: first for the stoning of the first day, then the second, then the third. This is the position of Al-Shafi'i and Abu Thawr. The evidence is that the Days of Tashreeq constitute a specific time period for the stoning; thus, delaying the action from the beginning of that period to its end does not incur an obligation, similar to delaying the standing at Arafah until the end of its prescribed time. Furthermore, since it is a time period during which stoning is valid, performing it later is permissible, just as the stoning of the first day is permissible.

Abu Hanifa holds that if one misses one, two, or three pebbles, they should throw them the next day, offering half a Sa' of food for each pebble missed. If four pebbles are missed, an expiatory sacrifice (*dam*) is due. Al-Qadi stated that the subsequent stoning is not considered a make-up act (*qada'*), because the time constitutes a single unified period, and *qada'* refers to the action itself, as in the command to 'then let them complete their rites' (a reference to a command structure, similar to 'I have paid off the debt').
