What is the ruling regarding the minimum amount of hair loss that necessitates expiation?
Chapter on Ransom (Fidyah) and Penalty for Hunting
Al-Mughni
Book of Hajj
Primary text
The expiation of one Mudd of food must be rendered because it is the least amount established by Sharia as an expiation, making it obligatory even for the smallest amount of lost hair. The food item required is that which is sufficient for the expiation of shaving the entire head initially, comprising wheat, barley, dates, or raisins, the same as what is obligatory for the expiation of four hairs.
Supporting text
Malik holds that for a small amount of hair removal, there is no liability, because the explicit text only mandates expiation for shaving the entire head, thus equating minor loss to the loss of the whole head. The people of opinion state that one should give charity (Sadaqah) of some kind because there is no specific measure, requiring the least amount upon which the name of charity can be placed.
