Primary text

If a pilgrim touches a perfumed substance that adheres to the hand, such as ghāliyah, rose water, or powdered musk adhering to the fingers, the Fidyah is obligatory because this constitutes using perfume. If the pilgrim touches something that does not cling, such as un-powdered musk, pieces of camphor, or ambergris, there is no Fidyah for touching. However, if they smell these non-clinging substances, the Fidyah is obligatory because this constitutes use. If the pilgrim smells 'ūd (agarwood), no Fidyah is due because it is not used for direct application in that manner.
