What is the ruling on repeating prohibited acts requiring a single expiation when the repetition is due to separate underlying causes?

Chapter on Ransom (Fidyah) and Penalty for Hunting

Al-Mughni

Open in Qurani

Primary text

According to one narration from Ahmad, if the repetition of an act like wearing prohibited garments is due to distinct reasons—such as wearing for cold, then for heat, then for illness—then multiple expiations are required. Furthermore, if a person wears a garment due to one ailment, recovers, and then wears the garment again due to a subsequent ailment, two expiations are due.

Supporting text

This view contrasts with another reported opinion from Ahmad where multiple garments worn for a single ailment (like fever) result in only one expiation.
