What is the ruling on Tawaf al-Ifadah after completing the rites of Hajj?
Chapter on the Description of Hajj
Al-Mughni
Book of Hajj
Primary text
The completion of Hajj requires that after stoning, sacrificing, and shaving, the pilgrim proceeds to Mecca to perform Tawaf al-Ifadah (also called Tawaf al-Ziyarah). This is a pillar (rukn) of Hajj, without which the Hajj is incomplete. There is no known disagreement on this matter. Its obligation is derived from the verse {And let them perform circumambulation of the Ancient House} (Quran 22:29). Scholars agree it is an essential part of Hajj. The incident involving Safiyyah being menstruated after the Tawaf on the Day of Sacrifice indicates that this Tawaf is obligatory and prevents the completion of Hajj for those who have not performed it.
