How must the sacrificial animal (Hady) be distributed after slaughter?
Chapter on the Description of Hajj
Al-Mughni
Book of Hajj
Primary text
The sacrificial animal must be distributed to the poor residing within the Sacred Precinct (Haram). If the executor releases the animal for general distribution to them, it is permissible, as demonstrated when the Prophet, peace be upon him, slaughtered five camels and commanded, "Whoever wishes may cut off [a portion] for himself," as narrated by Anas and recorded by Abu Dawud. Dividing it oneself is better and superior. The slaughterer (Jāzir) must not be given any portion as wages.

It is obligatory to distribute the entire animal, including its hide and coverings, as the Prophet commanded Ali to do so, stating, "We shall give him (the slaughterer) from what we have of our own possessions." This is because distributing it ensures certainty in delivering it to its rightful recipients, saving the poor from jostling and fighting over it. Giving the slaughterer a portion as payment is akin to selling it, which is impermissible. However, if the slaughterer is poor and receives a portion due to his poverty, beyond his wages, it is permissible, as he is entitled to it by his poverty, not his service.
