Primary text

There are two differing views on the obligation of separation. The first opinion holds that it is not obligatory. This is the view of Abu Hanifa, drawing an analogy that just as making up missed fasting days (Qada Ramadan) after invalidation is not obligatory, so too is this separation. The second view asserts that it is obligatory because the command for separation was narrated from the Companions mentioned, and no dissenting opinion from them is known. Furthermore, being together in that place reminds them of the intercourse, thus leading to its potential recommencement.

Supporting text

The first view is considered stronger, because the wisdom behind separation is safeguarding against the mere thought of recurrence upon recalling the location, and this potential thought is deemed a remote possibility that does not necessitate obligation.
