Does the state of Ihram affect the permissibility of consuming domestic animals?
Chapter on What the Muhrim Must Avoid and What is Permissible for Him
Al-Mughni
Book of Hajj
Primary text
The state of Ihram does not render any domestic animal, such as livestock, unlawful for consumption. This is because the prohibition in the state of Ihram is specifically directed towards hunting (sayd), and domestic animals do not fall under that category. Evidence for this is found in the practice of the Prophet, peace be upon him, who used to slaughter camels in the Haram while in Ihram as an act of seeking closeness to Allah. Furthermore, the Prophet stated that the best aspect of Hajj involves 'al-'ajj wa al-thajj,' which refers to the shedding of blood through slaughtering and neck-slitting.
