Primary text

The Sunnah is to hasten the performance of both prayers (Maghrib and Isha) and to perform them before setting down the burdens (hutt al-rihal), based on Usamah's hadith, which mentioned that the Prophet established Iqamah for Maghrib, people set down their animals, and they did not unpack until the Iqamah for the final Isha was established and he prayed. The Sunnah is to perform no voluntary prayers between the two obligatory prayers. There is no known difference of opinion among scholars on this point.

Ibn Mas'ud was reported to have performed voluntary prayer between them, claiming to have narrated this from the Prophet. However, the narrations of Usamah and Ibn Umar, stating the Prophet did not pray between them, are considered sounder and have precedence, consistent with the ruling on not separating the prayers.
