Primary text

The Sunnah is to hasten the prayer immediately after the sun passes its zenith (dhalal al-shams) and to shorten the sermon, after which one should proceed to the stopping place (waqf). This is based on the narration where Salim advised Al-Hajjaj to shorten the sermon and hasten the prayer to follow the Sunnah, which Ibn Umar confirmed as correct. The evidence for hastening is that prolonging these actions prevents proceeding to the stopping place at the beginning of the time of zenith. Ibn Umar narrated that the Prophet, peace be upon him, departed from Mina after the morning prayer on the Day of Arafah, arriving at Arafah and stopping at Namirah. When it was time for the noon prayer, the Prophet hastened his departure, combining the noon and afternoon prayers, then delivered the sermon, and then proceeded to the stopping place in Arafah. This is also supported by the narration of Jabir.
