Primary text

Tawaf is invalid if the pilgrim reverses the direction so that the House (Kaaba) is on their right side. This view is held by Malik and Al-Shafi'i. The basis for this ruling is that the Prophet, peace be upon him, placed the Kaaba on his left during Tawaf, and he commanded, "Take your rituals from me." Furthermore, since it is an act of worship related to the House, sequence is obligatory in it, similar to prayer.

Abu Hanifa holds that the Tawaf is valid. If the pilgrim reverses the direction, they should repeat what they performed in Mecca, and if they fail to return, expiation with a blood sacrifice is required. This is because reversing the direction is leaving an advisable form (hay'a), which does not invalidate the act, just as leaving the *raml* (brisk walk) or *idhtiba'* (uncovering the shoulder) does not invalidate it.
