Is there compensation due if the egg has no intrinsic value because it is spoiled or contains a dead chick?
Chapter on Ransom (Fidyah) and Penalty for Hunting
Al-Mughni
Book of Hajj
Primary text
If the egg lacks value because it is infertile (mudhra) or its chick is already dead, nothing is due, comparing it to stones and wood. This is because if it does not contain a viable animal, nor is it destined to become one, it loses its status as hunted game product. This is supported by the fact that if one pierces an egg and removes its contents, the penalty for the entire egg is due, but if one breaks the empty shell afterwards, no penalty is incurred.

The companions stated an exception for ostrich eggs, asserting that their shell retains value. However, the correct position is that nothing is due, as it lacks the essential characteristic of potential life.
