Primary text

The male and female animals are equal in significance for the Hady offering. Scholars such as Ibn al-Musayyib, Umar ibn Abd al-Aziz, Malik, Atāʼ, and Al-Shafi'i permitted the offering of male camels. The basis for this view is the saying of Allah: "And the sacrificial animals We have made for you as rites of Allah" (Quran 22:36), which does not specify gender. Furthermore, it is established that the Prophet (peace be upon him) offered a male camel on behalf of Abu Jahl, which had a ring in its nose. This is also supported by the fact that the offering is permissible across all types of livestock (An'am), evidenced by the Prophet's saying, "It is as if he sacrificed a horned ram." Additionally, since the purpose is meat, and the meat of the male is more abundant while the female's is softer, they equate. The castrated male animal is preferred over the ewe because its meat is more abundant and better tasting.

Ibn 'Umar stated that he had never seen anyone perform the offering in a way other than what he preferred, and that sacrificing a female animal was more beloved to him.
