Primary text

It is permissible if the stoning on the Day of Sacrifice is performed before sunset. Ibn Abd al-Barr established consensus among the people of knowledge that one who performs the stoning on the Day of Sacrifice before sunset has done so within its allotted time, even if it is not the preferable time. Ibn Abbas narrated that the Prophet (peace be upon him) was asked in Mina on the Day of Sacrifice by a man who asked if he had thrown after evening fell, to which the Prophet replied, 'There is no harm' (La haraj), as narrated by Al-Bukhari.

Supporting text

If the throwing is delayed until the night of the Day of Sacrifice, it should not be performed until the sun passes its zenith (Zawal) the following day. This is the view of Abu Hanifa and Ishaq. Al-Shafi'i, Muhammad bin al-Mundhir, and Ya'qub permit throwing it at night based on the Prophet's statement, 'Throw, and there is no harm.' Ibn Umar narrated that whoever misses the stoning until sunset should not throw it until the sun passes its zenith the next day, interpreting the Prophet's statement, 'There is no harm,' as pertaining only to the daylight hours of the Day of Sacrifice.
