The time limit for the standing at Arafah.
Chapter on the Description of Hajj
Al-Mughni
Book of Hajj
Primary text
The standing at Arafah must extend until sunset. This ensures inclusion of both the night and the day in the standing, as the Prophet, peace be upon him, stood until the sun completely set, as reported in the narrations of Jabir, Ali, and Usama. If one departs before sunset, their Hajj is valid according to a group of jurists.
Supporting text
Malik is of the opinion that if one departs before sunset, the Hajj is invalid. This view is contradicted by the narration of Ibn Umar stating that whoever catches Arafah at night has performed Hajj, implying validity even if one leaves before sunset. Furthermore, the Prophet's statement allowing completion if one witnesses the Fajr prayer at Muzdalifah and stood at Arafah previously, whether by night or day, supports validity even if the departure was before complete sunset.
