Primary text

The time for the standing at Arafat commences from the first light of dawn (Fajr) on the Day of Arafat and concludes at the first light of dawn (Fajr) on the Day of Sacrifice (Yawm an-Nahr). There is no known disagreement among scholars that the end time is the dawn of the Day of Sacrifice. Evidence for this includes the statement attributed to the Prophet, peace be upon him, relayed by Jabir: "The Hajj is not missed until the dawn of the night of Jumu'ah (Day of Sacrifice) rises." Those who are sane and apprehend any portion of this time while at Arafat have completed their Hajj.

Malik and Al-Shafi'i maintain that the beginning of the time for the standing is when the sun passes its zenith (Zawal) on the Day of Arafat. Abu Hafs al-'Ukbarī preferred this view, and Ibn 'Abd al-Barr narrated it as a consensus. This view is based on an interpretation of al-Khiraqi's statement regarding one who stands during the day and departs before the Imam, who must offer a sacrifice (dam).
