Primary text

The Umrah performed by the Mutamatti (one intending Umrah and Hajj separately) and the Qarin (one intending to perform both Hajj and Umrah together) suffices for the obligatory Umrah. Furthermore, the Umrah performed starting from the nearest boundary of the Haram (Adna al-Hill) suffices for the obligatory Umrah. This view is held without known dissent among Ibn Umar, 'Ata, Tawus, and Mujahid. The evidence is the statement of Al-Sabi' ibn Ma'bad who said he made Ihram for both Hajj and Umrah, to which Umar replied, 'You have followed the Sunnah of your Prophet.' This indicates that performing both actions concurrently is permissible and fulfills the obligation. Additionally, regarding Aisha, when she performed Qiran, the Prophet (peace be upon him) said upon her completion, 'You are now free from your Hajj and your Umrah.'

Supporting text

A narration attributed to Ahmad states that the Umrah of the Qarin does not suffice for the obligatory Umrah, which is also the choice of Abu Bakr. Similarly, it is narrated from Ahmad that Umrah originating from the nearest boundary of the Haram does not suffice for the obligatory Umrah, specifying that it must originate from four miles out.
