Primary text

If it is established that applying kohl generally implies adornment, then the use of ithmid kohl is disliked, but it does not necessitate a penalty (fidya). There is no known dispute regarding the non-necessity of fidya. Aisha stated that a woman experiencing eye trouble while in Ihram should use any kohl except ithmid, noting it is not forbidden but is adornment, which they dislike. Al-Shafi'i stated that if a Muhrim does it, there is no fidya known upon them.

Supporting text

Aisha stated to a woman, 'Apply any kohl you wish, except ithmid or black kohl.' Furthermore, Shumaysah narrated from Aisha that when asked about eye trouble during Ihram, Aisha advised using any kohl except ithmid, clarifying it is not sinful but is adornment, which they dislike.
