Validity of entering Ihram for two Hajj or two Umrah simultaneously

Chapter on Mentioning Ihram

Al-Mughni

Book of Hajj

Book 11 · Issue 1 · Bab 2

Open in Qurani

Primary text

If a person enters the state of Ihram for two Hajj or two Umrah, the Ihram is established for only one of them, and the other becomes null and void. This opinion is held by Malik and Al-Shafi'i. The evidence for this is that the two acts are distinct forms of worship, and the person is not obligated to proceed with both, thus their simultaneous entry into Ihram is invalid, analogous to two prescribed prayers.

Supporting text

Abu Hanifa holds that the Ihram is established for both acts, requiring the person to make up one of them later because they entered the state of Ihram for it but did not complete it.
