Validity of Ihram (sanctification) without specifying Hajj or Umrah
Chapter on Mentioning Ihram
Al-Mughni
Book of Hajj
Primary text
Ihram entered into without specifying whether it is for Hajj or Umrah is valid, and the person becomes consecrated (muhrim). This is permissible because the consecration is valid even if vaguely stated, and thus valid when left general (mutlaq). Upon entering Ihram generally, the individual has the right to dedicate it to any ritual they choose (Hajj or Umrah). It is preferable to dedicate it to Umrah. If the time is outside the months designated for Hajj, entering Ihram for Hajj is disliked or prohibited. If it is during the months of Hajj, Umrah is preferred because Tamattu' (Hajj via Umrah first) is considered superior.

Imam Ahmad, may Allah have mercy upon him, stated that the general Ihram should be converted to Umrah. This is based on the precedent where the Prophet (peace be upon him) instructed Abu Musa to change his Ihram, which matched the Ihram of the Prophet (PBUH), to Umrah, analogous to the current situation.
