Is a young sheep (Jadh' of the sheep) sufficient for the Eid sacrifice (Adha)?
Chapter on Ransom (Fidyah) and Penalty for Hunting

Book of Hajj
Primary text
The Jadh' of the sheep is sufficient for the Eid sacrifice. Evidence for this is the narration from Umm Bilal bint Hilal, from her father, that the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, said: 'The Jadh' of the sheep suffices as the Adha.' Furthermore, a Hadith from Mujashi' bin Sulaym states that the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, used to say: 'The Jadh' fulfills what the Thani fulfills.' Additionally, the Hadith of Jabir permits the Jadh' of the sheep when the Thani is difficult. The narration of Abu Burda bin Niyar, where the Prophet permitted him to use his young goat (Jadhaa') as the sacrifice, declaring it sufficient for him but not for anyone after him, further supports the specific allowance for sheep.

Abu Ubayd Al-Harawi and Ibrahim Al-Harbi explained the specific allowance for the Jadh' of the sheep, stating that it is permitted because it is capable of mating and propagating, whereas a Jadh' goat is generally not considered capable of mating until it reaches the age of Thani.
