It is disliked (*yukrah*) for one who knows the situation to urge another toward confession. This is based on the tradition where the Prophet (peace be upon him) told Hudhayl, regarding Ma'iz, that it would have been better for him had he covered Ma'iz with his garment. Moreover, it is related that when Ma'iz ibn Malik approached 'Umar ibn al-Khattab after committing a major sin, 'Umar advised him to conceal his act with God's veil, repent, and not inform anyone, stating that people only shame others, while God changes circumstances and does not shame. Abu Bakr gave similar advice, but Ma'iz persisted until he reached the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him).
