When multiple punishments are due, must they be carried out sequentially or simultaneously?
Chapter on Amputation in Theft
Al-Mughni
Book of Ḥudūd (Prescribed Penalties)
Primary text
If a person has a penalty prescribed for one limb, such as the hand for theft, and another penalty is subsequently due on another limb, such as the leg due as Qisas, the second punishment is postponed until the first wound heals. This sequential execution is mandatory to prevent excessive harm, unlike simultaneous penalties for highway robbery, which are considered a single category of punishment. If multiple Hadud were administered consecutively without waiting for healing, it would resemble an addition beyond the prescribed limit.
