The established Sunnah is for the Imam to stone first, followed by the rest of the people, based on the saying of Ali, may Allah be pleased with him. There is no known disagreement regarding the desirability of this practice. The basis for this is the report that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, stoned a woman, ordering them to dig a pit for her up to her collarbone (Thundwah), then he threw a pebble the size of a chickpea at her and commanded: 'Throw, but avoid the face.' This is narrated by Abu Dawud.
