Primary text

The required act of slaughter entails cutting the windpipe (*Hulqum*) and the esophagus (*Mar'*). This view is held by Al-Shafi'i. This action ensures that what life cannot continue without is severed.

Supporting text

A second narration from Ahmad, supported by Malik and Abu Yusuf, requires cutting both jugular veins (*Wadjayn*) in addition to the windpipe and esophagus, citing the prohibition of 'the devil's band' (*Sharitat al-Shaytan*), which describes cutting only the skin without severing the veins. Abu Hanifah requires cutting the windpipe, esophagus, and one jugular vein. Cutting all four is considered most complete and preferable as it hastens the departure of the soul.
