Is the consumption of cheese permissible?
General Chapter
Al-Mughni
Book of Hunting and Slaughter
Primary text
Cheese is permissible to eat from every source. Concerning cheese made by the Magians (Zoroastrians), the ruling relies upon the narration involving Umar ibn al-Khattab. When asked about cheese where rennet from a dead animal is used, Umar responded, 'Name it yourselves (mention its name), and eat it.' This narration, transmitted via Al-A'mash from Abu Wa'il, from 'Amr ibn Shurahbil, supports its permissibility, suggesting that the source of the rennet is disregarded if it is named.
