The consumption of the hedgehog is forbidden (*haram*). Abu Hurayrah reported that the Prophet, peace be upon him, described it as foul and among the vile things (*khabith min al-khaba'ith*), as narrated by Abu Dawud. Furthermore, it resembles prohibited animals and feeds on insects, thereby resembling the rat.

Malik and Abu Hanifah disliked its consumption, while Al-Shafi'i, Al-Layth, and Abu Thawr permitted it.
