Is the consumption of the jerboa (al-Jirri) disliked (makruh)?
General Chapter
Al-Mughni
Book of Hunting and Slaughter
Primary text
The consumption of the jerboa is not disliked. This ruling is supported by 'Ali, Al-Hasan, Malik, Al-Shafi'i, Abu Thawr, the People of Opinion (Ashab al-Ra'y), and the rest of the scholars. The evidence against dislike is found in the statement that Al-Jirri is not eaten by the Jews, and the scholars' agreement contradicts the view of disapproval.
Supporting text
Ibn Abbas mentioned that the Jews do not eat the jerboa. The Rafidah (Shi'a sect) concur with the Jews on this point, but their opposition (to eating it) is considered correct (in that they are wrong to prohibit it, implying the ruling is permission).
