Primary text

The elephant is forbidden (*muharram*). Ahmad stated that it is not among the foods of Muslims. Al-Hasan declared it to be transmogrified (*maskh*). Abu Hanifa and Al-Shafi'i disliked its consumption. The evidence against eating it is the Prophet's prohibition against consuming every predatory animal possessing fangs (*dhi naab*), and the elephant is one of the greatest in terms of tusks. Furthermore, it is considered repulsive (*mustakhbath*), thus falling under the general ruling of forbidden things in the general Divine prohibition.
