Is the food prepared by Magians, excluding meat, permissible to eat?
General Chapter
Al-Mughni
Book of Hunting and Slaughter
Primary text
Imam Ahmad stated that the food of Magians is fine to eat, and if a gift of it is offered, it should be accepted. Dislike is directed only towards their slaughtered meat or anything containing rendered fat/meat. He saw no issue with eating their ghee and bread. Furthermore, he was asked about what Magians prepare for their deceased, where they make sounds over it for ten days and then divide it among neighbors, and he stated there is no issue with that. Al-Sha'bi said: 'Eat with a Magian even if he makes Zamazim (mourning sounds).'
Supporting text
It is narrated that Sa'id ibn Jubayr ate the 'Kwamikh' (a type of food/stew) of the Magians and was pleased with it. Al-Hasan also saw no issue with the food of Magians in the city, nor their 'Shawariz' or 'Kwamikh'.
