Primary text

The game hunted by a Muslim's dog is permissible to eat if the Magian's dog caused the game to return and be killed by the Muslim's dog. This is the position held by Al-Shafi'i and Abu Thawr. The permissibility is established because the Muslim's hunting animal acted independently in securing the kill. This ruling is analogous to a situation where a Magian's arrow missed, and a Muslim's arrow struck and killed the game, or if a Magian restrained a sheep and a Muslim slaughtered it.

Abu Hanifa ruled that the game is not permissible to eat because the Magian's dog participated in the hunt, making its involvement equivalent to the animal being wounded (aqr) by the Magian.
