Primary text

If the trained animal drinks the blood of the game without eating the flesh, the game is not forbidden. Imam Ahmad stipulated this, as do Al-Shafi'i, Ishaq, and the companions of Ra'y. This ruling is derived from the generality of the Quran and Hadith, specifically noting that the prohibition was restricted only to eating by the Hadith of 'Adi ibn Hatim. Since drinking blood is not the intended purpose for the hunter, and the animal did not eat, it remains considered as having held the game for the hunter.

Al-Sha'bi and Al-Thawri disliked this practice because it is considered analogous to eating.
