How must impure oil be used for lighting if permitted?
General Chapter
Al-Mughni
Book of Hunting and Slaughter
Primary text
If using the impure oil for lighting is established as permissible, it must be done in a manner where the user does not touch it and its impurity does not transfer to the user. This can be achieved by pouring the oil from a jug with a spout without touching it, or by placing a lamp with a wick or small lamp with a hole on top of the oil jar, sealing it, and pouring water into the lamp as the oil depletes to keep the lamp filled, preventing direct contact with the impure substance.

Ahmad did not permit oiling leather hides with it, though he permitted using it for waterskins and watersacks. 'Umar narrated that hides were oiled with it, which Ahmad found surprising, suggesting that any use leading to the contamination of a person is impermissible according to his view, even if it does not lead to direct contact.
