The consumption of an animal subjected to 'Masbura' or 'Mujathama' is forbidden. Ahmad and Ishaq hold this view. Mujathama refers to setting a bird or rabbit as a target and shooting it until death, whereas Masbura applies to any animal used similarly. The basis for prohibition is the Prophet's (peace be upon him) prohibition of torturing animals, stating, "Do not make anything possessing a soul a target." Saeed narrated from Abu Ad-Darda that the Messenger of Allah prohibited every Mujathama, and a narration from Mujahid confirmed the prohibition of eating both Mujathama and Masbura. Furthermore, since it is a capable animal, it is not permissible except through proper slaughter (Dhabh), like a camel or cow.
