Is it permissible to put fish into fire?
General Chapter
Al-Mughni
Book of Hunting and Slaughter
Primary text
Putting fish into fire is disliked, not because the resulting meat is forbidden, but due to the intentional torture of the animal with fire. The quickly fatal method of allowing the fish to die naturally is preferable when possible. Regarding locusts (Jarrad), putting them in fire is easier because they do not possess flowing blood.
Supporting text
It is narrated that Ka'b burned two locusts he took while in the state of Ihram, and 'Umar did not object to him leaving them in the fire. Furthermore, it is mentioned that when locusts are consumed, they are typically prepared by cutting off their wings and then immersing them in hot oil while alive.
