Primary text
If a limb is severed after slaughter but before the soul fully departs, its consumption is apparently permissible. Ahmad confirmed that if a man slaughters a chicken and severs its head, it may be eaten, including the severed part. Ibn 'Umar and Ibn 'Abbas held that if the head is cut off, there is no harm. This view is held by 'Ata, Al-Hasan, An-Nakh'i, Ash-Sha'bi, Az-Zuhri, Ash-Shafi'i, Ishaq, Abu Thawr, and the proponents of the Opinion (Ashaab ar-Ra'y), because the severing occurs after the slaughter has been established, akin to cutting it after death.
