Primary text
The utilization of the fat derived from carrion or swine is strictly prohibited, whether for lighting lamps (istisbah) or any other purpose. This prohibition extends to smearing it on ships or leather goods. The evidence for this ruling is the Prophetic tradition stating that Allah has forbidden carrion, swine, and idols. When asked about using the fat of carrion for smearing ships, anointing leather, and for people's lamps, the Prophet, peace be upon him, explicitly stated, 'No, it is forbidden.' This narration is agreed upon (Muttafaq 'alayh).
