Primary text

The mule is unlawful (haram). This ruling applies to all who prohibit the consumption of domesticated asses because the mule is generated from the ass, and what is generated from a prohibited thing inherits its ruling of prohibition. This principle extends to offspring resulting from a union between human and wild animals, as the prohibition is favored. Similarly, a hybrid born between a wolf and a hyena is prohibited. Qatadah stated that the mule is merely a variation of the ass. Evidence is established from Jabir, who reported that on the Day of Khaybar, horses, mules, and asses were slaughtered, and the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, prohibited the consumption of mules and asses, but did not prohibit horses.
