Primary text

The slaughter of obtainable game or livestock is only permissible through proper ritual slaughter (*Dhabihah*), unanimously agreed upon by scholars. The *Dhabihah* requires five elements: a slaughterer (*Dhabih*), a tool (*Aalah*), a location (*Mahal*), the act itself (*Fi'l*), and the invocation of God's name (*Dhikr*). The slaughterer must be a Muslim or a person of the Book (Ahl al-Kitab) and possess sound mind to intend the act. Slaughter by one lacking intellect, such as a non-discerning child, an insane person, or an intoxicated person, is unlawful because the intention is invalid.
