Primary text

There are two conflicting opinions attributed to Ahmad regarding the Hoopoe and the Shrike. One opinion states that they are permissible (Halal) because they do not possess talons (dawat al-mikhlab) and are not considered repulsive (mustakhbath).

Supporting text

The second opinion attributes their prohibition (Tahrim) to the Prophet's (peace be upon him) prohibition against killing the Hoopoe, the Shrike, the Ant (Naml), and the Bee (Nahl). However, a general principle is established that anything that does not hunt with talons, does not consume carrion, and is not considered repulsive, is permissible.
