What is the ruling on consuming oil or ghee contaminated by a dog's lapping?
General Chapter
Al-Mughni
Book of Hunting and Slaughter
Primary text
If a dog laps up ghee or oil in a large container, such as a large jar (Habb), it is hoped that there is no issue, and it may be eaten. If the container is small, eating it is not favored. The issue is less severe if the dog exits the liquid while alive, such as when a dog falls into more than two Qullahs of vinegar. This is related to the principle that liquids originating from water, like vinegar, can resist impurity when abundant.
Supporting text
Based on the narration concerning Ibn Mas'ud regarding a mouse falling into ghee, only the flesh and blood of a dead animal are prohibited. However, regarding the fat, the Prophet (peace be upon him) was asked about a mouse falling into ghee: if it was solid, the mouse and surrounding area should be removed; if it was liquid, one should not approach it.
