Primary text

The jackal (Ibn Awa) is unlawful (haram) to consume. Imam Ahmad stated that everything that tears with its fangs is considered a predator (Siba'). This view is held by Abu Hanifa and his associates. The evidence supporting its prohibition is that it is a predator falling under the general prohibition, and because it is considered repulsive and undesirable (mustakhbath). Furthermore, the jackal resembles a dog, has a foul odor, and thus falls under the general prohibition against consuming impure things mentioned in the Quran.
