What is the ruling on feeding carrion (maytah) to a trained dog or bird?
General Chapter
Al-Mughni
Book of Hunting and Slaughter
Primary text
It is not deemed appropriate to feed carrion to a trained dog or a trained bird because doing so encourages them to prey on carrion. If the dog consumes carrion, the owner bears no blame. The reluctance regarding the trained dog possibly eating what it kills stems from the concern that feeding it carrion encourages this behavior.
Supporting text
Imam Malik did not dislike feeding carrion to a trained dog or bird because such animals are not intended for consumption, provided the animal does not drink from the owner's vessel.
